What are badges? Do we want to gamify education? Does gamifying education just mean slapping a badge on every homework assignment, or is there something more to it? Games are a powerful motivator, but what is it about them that is motivating, and is that motivation something that belongs in education?

These are all challenging questions that are being brought to light in recent discussions about education. At this point, I can't say I have the answers to these questions, but I can bring my perspective as a long-time gamer, practiced scientist, and after-school educator. I will discuss the history of badges in games, what makes games good learning tools, and some guidelines for good and bad ways to gamify education.
