The Future City Competition is an annual competition for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. There are approximately 35 regional competitions held in January of every year throughout the U.S., one of which is held in the Capital District. Winners of each regional competition go on to compete for the national title in Washington D.C. during Engineers Week. The Competition is unique in that it is multi-faceted with various tasks the students need to complete. These tasks include planning and designing a virtual city using SimCity 4 software, building a physical model with recycled materials, researching and writing a solution to an engineering problem, writing a narrative describing their city, and presenting their ideas before a panel of judges.
